mommy's bird
A message in the sand from Mia.
A self-portrait on paper. She is, and will forever be, my little bird (hence the name here). She's seven. She's not the seven-going-on-seventeen type, but she is growing up lightening-fast. She's a happy kid. Often times it feels as though she is too bright for me to possibly keep up with her. She might eclipse me at any moment. I have felt this way all her life. I do my best.
And here, for scale, she is with my biggest softie yet (and quite a challenge for me), a fawn sewn out of linen and wool boucle.

Love the fawn...simply beautiful. You have a very talented seven year old. What a fantastic self-portrait!

You guys have got that long-leg gene. Even the fawn.

The boucle is the perfect thing for this fawn. It's wonderful.

Last week she mentioned something about being your little bird - I thought it was so sweet. I know the feeling of watching your children elipse you - Mom

How lucky you are to have a source of bright sunlight so close by.
And this comment from your mom? Wow. (hand to heart.)

What a lovely self portrait - you've done a wonderful job of really loving and accepting the soul of your kiddos, and they so clearly feel it. Mia is magical.
I'll miss Little Birds. It has really enlarged my thinking and made me reflect more deeply about how I have chosen to live... what a gift! You have inspired me, and introduced me to many Cool Things.
Thanks, Stephanie, and I wish you the best. I'll keeping checking in to see what you're up to.

Reminds me of me and my mom ... I call her "mama bird" she calls me "little bird" and now my daughter is "baby bird." That, plus the fact that she's always told me how she felt she had to run to keep one step ahead of her bright kids ... and now I am experiencing the same thing with my own child. Amazing, this motherhood/daughterhood!

Reading what you wrote about Mia...ahhh, I feel the exact same way about my daughter Alex. She is a source of so much joy and pride, and I'm afraid that age nine she is far more intelligent than I'll ever be!! What a wonderful bond you have created with your children. Hugs!

That fawn is simply the cutest thing ever! I've never made softies, but really want to try. Are there any book you can recommend? thanks, Lisa.

It is so refreshing to hear about girls who are not seven going on seventeen. Good job on letting your kids be kids.
I'll miss this blog.

It breaks my heart to read that you are going to give up blogging -- I certainly respect your need to do what is right for you; I just hope that after some time away you will perhaps feel your own need, for your own reasons, to return. Nothing's fun once it feels like a chore, or feels that you're not getting out of it what you put in (or what you'd like to get from you). I thank you sincerely for all you have shared and wish you the very best on the adventure ahead.

My dad calls me Bird Legs. :) Always has. Always will.
I love the abstract touches on Mia's self-portrait. Your family, and the way I can see you raise your children, is beautiful and inspiring.
